After almost two weeks away from the diamond the well-rested Bemidji VFW baseball team will begin defense of its state tournament title 11:30 a.m. Thursday when it tangles with Morris.

Bemidji, 26-9, will be aided by the home-field advantage throughout the meet as the state tournament games will be played at the BSU diamond and the Prep North field behind the Little League complex.

Bemidji is the District 9 champion while Morris came from behind to defeat Alexandria 9-8 in the District 5 title game. Earlier in the District 5 meet Morris defeated Dawson, Benson 7-2 and New London-Spicer 10-0.

The double-elimination state tournament begins 9 a.m. Thursday when Winona and RanView tangle at BSU and Elk River takes on Perham at Prep North.

The Winona-RanView winner will face Eagan at 4:30 p.m. while the Elk River-Perham survivor will meet Luverne at 7 p.m.

Thursday's other lower-bracket first round game pits Grand Rapids against Little Falls at 2 p.m.

If Bemidji wins its opener it will advance to Friday's noon winner's bracket semifinal. A loss in its opener would drop the VFW into an elimination game Thursday at 3 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for noon on Sunday. A second title game, if necessary, will be played at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
