The Bemidji High School boys and girls track teams both earned top-two finishes in the Paul Bunyan Classic Tuesday at the Gillett-Recreation Fitness Center.

The boys took first place with 89 points and the girls finished second behind Grand Rapids. The Thunderhawks won with 142 points to Bemidji's 88.

"It was a pleasant surprise," Bemidji boys coach Steve Sneide said. "We weren't necessarily going in trying to win the meet; we just tried to stack a few relays to see where we were at."

For the boys, Brady Schmidt won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.36 seconds. Seth Wall and Dylan Dickinson finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Seth Neubeck and Elias Hendrickson finished second and third, respectively, in the 800. Neubeck finished with a time of 2:10.66 and Hendrickson at 2:11.53.

The boys relay teams finished first and eighth in the 4x200. The "A" team won with a time of 1:38.71.

Bemidji also won the 4x800 with a time of 8:49.50, beating the closest competitors by 25 seconds.

For the girls, Jenna Truedson set a school and fieldhouse record with a time of 5:09.16 in the 1,600-meter run.

"That was really nice to see," Bemidji girls coach Chris Lehman said. "Especially indoors and this early in the season."

Danielle Gronhovd won the 800 meter run for the girls. She finished with a time of 2:33.98.

Bemidji received third- and fourth-place finishes in the hurdles thanks to Nicole Hendrickson and Leanne Oakes.

Allie Heifort won the discus and finished third in the shot put.

Vanessa Lane of Pequot Lakes and Jesse Eastman of Roseau were named most valuable individuals of the meet.

Bemidji returns to the track next Tuesday with another meet at BSU.

"We will play it by ear and see where the kids are at," Sneide said. "We're fighting some injuries right now and we don't want to hurt anyone too bad."

"Hopefully we can rest a few kids this week," Lehman said. "Indoor season is about trying kids out and seeing where we are at as a team."
