BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State women’s hockey team fell down 2-0 against No. 1 Ohio State on Sunday at the Sanford Center, and it looked as though the Buckeyes might pull away without giving the Beavers a chance to catch up.
But BSU held the line and answered back, scoring twice to force a 2-2 tie. OSU’s offensive attack took over down the stretch with three goals, though, and the Buckeyes separated late for a 5-2 win to clinch the series sweep.
Ohio State (6-0, 6-0 WCHA) got on the board first with Emma Maltais’ goal at 18:15 in the first period, then doubled it with Riley Brengman’s score at 6:34 in the second. But Geno Hendrickson responded for Bemidji State (2-5-1, 0-4 WCHA) with a goal at 9:56, then Kendra Fortin scored the first of her career at 6:01 in the third period.
The latter part of the third period belonged to the Buckeyes, though. Sydney Morrow scored on the power play at 10:32 to give OSU a 3-2 lead, then Sophie Jaques scored again at 10:58 and added an empty-netter at 19:58 to seal Ohio State’s victory.
Hannah Hogenson stopped 45 shots on net to keep BSU in the game, while the Buckeyes’ Amanda Thiele collected eight saves.
