WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Beavers fall in threatening upset bid
MOORHEAD -- The Bemidji State women’s basketball team narrowly missed out on an upset for the ages at Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday.
The Beavers (2-11, 0-9 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) led for much of the game against an MSUM team that came in on a 10-game winning streak, but the Dragons (13-2, 9-0 NSIC) ultimately pulled away 62-54 to spoil any potential shockwaves sent out across the league by BSU.
Bemidji State used its defense in the early going to keep close. Its full-court press slowed down Minnesota State Moorhead and opened the door for a quick 6-0 run that tied things at 10-10.
MSUM carried a 12-10 edge into the second quarter, but then the Beavers took off. Claire Wolhowe and Maria Appicelli knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to finish an 8-0 run and put BSU ahead 23-20. The Dragons didn’t let things slip away, though, and Bemidji State had a 27-24 lead by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Beavers built a five-point edge at 35-30 off a Sydney Zerr three, but Kiley Borowicz tied it back up at 41-all late in the frame with a pair of free throws for MSUM.
BSU last had a lead at 45-44 when Brooklyn Bachmann made a layup, but the Dragons netted seven straight points to steal control.
Bemidji State crawled back within a possession on a Trinity Myer free throw, still with two minutes left, but it was as close as the Beavers came. MSUM ran off another 7-0 spurt to put the 62-54 win on ice.
Taylor Bray led BSU with 14 points on four shots, and Bachmann added 12 alongside 10 from Zerr. Megan Hintz put up 19 for the Dragons, while Borowicz had 16 and Jacky Volkert 12.
Bemidji State will return to action at 4 p.m. today against Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.
Freshman guard Shea Oman did not travel with the team for the weekend trip “due to a violation of team rules,” per BSU. No further details were provided at the time.
