BOYS BASKETBALL: Section 8A East narrowed to four teams


RED LAKE -- The Section 8A East boys basketball field was reduced from eight to four Thursday night, with Cass Lake-Bena, Red Lake, Win-E-Mac and Fosston all coming away with home victories over their respective opponents.

The East’s fourth seed, Red Lake (13-12) topped No. 5 Blackduck 100-76 in Red Lake, ending the Drakes season with a record of 10-17.

The Warriors advance to take on top-seeded Cass Lake-Bena (26-1) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

Arnold Kingbird and Noah DeLapaz put up 28 and 25 points, respectively, in Cass Lake’s 89-42 win over No. 8 Clearbrook-Gonvick. The Bears season ends with a 9-19 record.

No. 6 Northome/Kelliher’s season also came to a close Thursday night with a 70-45 loss to No. 3 Win-E-Mac.

The Mustangs finish the season with nine wins and 18 losses, while the Patriots (16-11) advance to play No. 2 Fosston at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Fosston defeated No. 7 Goodridge/Grygla-Gatzke 64-47 to improve to 21-6 on the year.

The winners of the 8A East semifinal matchups advance to the subsection title game, which takes place at 7:45 p.m. Monday, March 12, back at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

In the Section 8AA Tournament, the North’s fourth seed out of East Grand Forks topped No. 5 Bagley 79-63, ending the Flyers’ season with a 13-13 record. EGF (16-11) moves on to face Perham (27-0), the South’s top seed, in a quarterfinal game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Concordia in Moorhead.
