MOORHEAD -- The Bemidji American Legion baseball team dropped a pair of games at Moorhead on Tuesday, falling 7-4 in the opener and 3-2 in an eight-inning finale.
In game one, Moorhead jumped ahead 3-1 through two innings. The Centaurs (1-3) came within 3-2 when Henry Michalicek scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth, but Moorhead answered back with three of its own in the home half to assume a 6-2 advantage.
Bemidji put up two more in the sixth -- JD Kondos scoring on a sacrifice fly and Josh Nyberg scoring on a passed ball -- but it wasn’t enough to come back in the 7-4 final.
Steven Peterson got tagged with the loss after 4 2/3 innings of nine-hit ball. He gave up six runs (four earned) and struck out five.
In game two, the Centaurs jumped ahead 2-0 in the second frame. Hunter Olson dashed home on a passed pall, and Grant DeClusin did the same one batter later.
However, Moorhead came back to tie in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of RBI singles.
The 2-2 deadlock brought on an extra frame, and after Bemidji went quietly in the top of the eighth, Moorhead manufactured the winning run on Isaac Howell’s infield single to walk off as 3-2 victors.
Isaiah Biehn went seven innings in a no decision for the Centaurs. He scattered nine hits and allowed two runs while striking out four. Colt Uhlenhopp pitched the eighth and allowed two hits and two walks.
Bemidji will next take part in the St. Cloud Tournament, starting on Friday, June 21, against Wayzata at 3:30 p.m. and against the St. Cloud Chutes at 8 p.m.
