BASEBALL: Beavers silenced at U-Mary
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Offense was hard to come by for the Bemidji State baseball team on Wednesday.
The Beavers produced just one run in a doubleheader set against U-Mary, falling 4-0 and 8-1 in Bismarck, N.D.
Parker Borg and Isaiah Grancorvitz were responsible for the run, as Borg singled in Grancorvitz in the seventh inning of game two. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Marauder bats throughout the afternoon.
In game one, U-Mary (14-26, 10-17 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) jumped ahead early with a three-run first inning.
From there, BSU sophomore Kenny Morris took over on the mound and cruised, spinning four innings of one-hit ball while striking out seven and walking none. He retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, but Bemidji State (6-30, 5-19 NSIC) couldn’t muster any runs on the other end.
The Beavers’ best chance came in the second, when they had two runners in scoring position with one out. However, a foul out and a groundout kept them off the board. And in the sixth, BSU had runners on the corners and nobody out, but it still didn’t result in any runs in the shutout loss.
Starter Kevin Smith took the loss for Bemidji State. He pitched one inning and gave up three runs on two hits and a walk.
In game two, the Marauders finally got to Zach Henderson in the fifth. The freshman starter went four scoreless innings to open the nightcap, but U-Mary put up four runs in the fifth to take the lead.
The first pair of runs crossed on Jaxson Ford’s triple, and Ford came in on Connor Doll’s RBI double. Tommy Geisenhof then relieved Henderson, but Doll scored on a Jesus Payan double later in the frame.
Three more Marauder runs combined to score on sixth-inning hits for Doll and Payan, sinking the Beavers into a 7-0 hole. Borg picked up his RBI in the seventh, but the damage was done in the eventual 8-1 defeat.
Henderson finished with the loss, going four-plus innings and surrendering four runs on five hits while striking out three.
The Beavers will return home for a four-game series against Minnesota Crookston, starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the BSU baseball field.
