BASEBALL: Mavs sweep Beavers in Crookston

CROOKSTON -- The Bemidji State baseball team was swept by Minnesota State Mankato Monday afternoon in a doubleheader, sustaining losses of 5-1 and 8-4. The games were moved to Crookston due to poor weather and field conditions in Mankato.

Alec Meyer opened the twinbill with two scoreless innings, holding the Mavericks (24-7, 19-3 NSIC) to two hits and stranding three runners on base. Scott Litchy plated the first run of the day on an RBI single in the third inning. The lone run gave the Beavers (4-24, 2-10 NSIC) their only lead of the day before MSU scored twice in the bottom of the second.

The Mavericks tacked on runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to build a four-run lead that led to the 5-1 final score. Meyer (1-4) took the loss for BSU while Litchy went 2-for-3 at the plate to led the team on offense.

MSU scored first in the second game, and in five of the first six innings, despite runs by the Beavers in the second and third innings. Noah Boser recorded his second extra-base hit of the day to drive in BSU’s first run in the top of the second inning, while Parker Borg crushed his second home run of the season to bring BSU to within one run at 4-3 in the third.

The Mavericks responded with two runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to assume an 8-3 lead late.

Drake Wawro delivered an RBI single in the eighth, but the Beavers were unable to mount a comeback. Starter Jake Olson (1-3) was saddled with the loss after throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Bemidji State will make another trip down Highway 2 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Minot State on Wednesday, April 18.
