DETROIT LAKES -- The Bemidji American Legion baseball team’s season came to an end following a pair of losses Thursday at the Sub-State 14 Tournament in Detroit Lakes. An extra-inning, 2-1 afternoon loss to East Grand Forks in the winner’s bracket semifinals sent the Centaurs to the elimination bracket Thursday night where they were knocked out 4-2 by Alexandria.
East Grand Forks tallied a run in the first inning of the afternoon contest before zeros filled the scoreboard until the seventh.
Hunter Olson delivered an RBI single in the top of the seventh that scored Henry Michalicek to level the score. The Centaurs shut down EGF in the bottom half to send the game to extras.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, East Grand Forks clinched the 2-1 victory when the home-plate umpire ruled the Bemidji catcher missed the tag on a fielder’s choice throw home that scored the winning run.
Now playing to keep their season alive, the Centaurs and Alexandria played through a scoreless first four innings in the evening elimination game.
The fifth inning produced the only offense of the contest as Alexandria racked up four runs in the top of the frame. Bemidji answered with two in the bottom half, both coming on an error-filled sequence.
Alexandria kept the Centaurs at bay the rest of the way en route to a 4-2 win.
Bemidji, which opened the postseason with a 6-3 win over Fergus Falls on Wednesday, finishes the season at 10-18.
