COHASSET -- The Bemidji High School baseball team split a doubleheader against Grand Rapids on Monday evening at Portage Park in Cohasset. The Lumberjacks fell 8-7 in game one before claiming a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Thunderhawks (1-4) took a 4-0 lead two innings into game one but BHS was able to claw back into the contest, eventually tying the game 6-6 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. However, Grand Rapids got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning for an 8-6 advantage.
Henry Michalicek cut the lead to one run in the top of the seventh with his RBI single but was thrown out as he headed to second on the play to end the game.
Johnny Melhus took the loss after pitching two-plus innings in relief and allowing two runs on two hits.
Bemidji struck first in game two, taking a 4-0 lead after tallying three runs in the second -- including two driven in by Colby Carlson’s single -- and one in the third on a double steal. The Thunderhawks (1-4) put two on the board in the bottom of the third as the score held at 4-2 until the final inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Grand Rapids made it a one-run game before Steven Peterson finished the game with a strikeout. Peterson pitched a complete game, going all seven innings in the win while allowing three runs on nine hits.
The split moves BHS to 3-1 overall on the season.
Hunter Olson played his first games of the season Monday after finishing up hockey season with the NAHL’s Bismarck Bobcats. The senior recorded five points (2g-3a) in 18 games with the junior team.
The Jacks will return to Bemidji for their home opener Tuesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against East Grand Forks at the BSU baseball field.
