BEMIDJI -- Bemidji Speedway celebrated its fans on a hot and humid Sunday with “Fan Appreciation Night” at the track.

Fans were able to receive discount tickets from their favorite drivers for the night’s racing, witnessing 90-plus cars once again filling the pits with all the regular classes running.

Next week, the Advantage RV Modified Tour rolls into town with many of the best Wissota Modified drivers in the Midwest racing for a $1,500 prize. The Superstocks and Mod Fours will have the night off, while all the other classes will be racing starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 24.

Eighteen Wissota Pure Stocks rolled on the track with Kade Leeper on the pole and Hunter Weeks to his right. Leeper powered to the early lead with Deryk Weleski, Dustin Puffe, Weeks, and Josh Berg in the top five before the first of several cautions slowed the race for restarts. Once racing resumed, Berg sped by several cars to pull into second behind Leeper. Berg then pulled up side-by-side with Leeper, but Leeper held off the challenge. With another caution, the race went to a Green-White checkered finish, and -- charging out of turn four and into the front straight -- Berg raced along the wall and beat Leeper to the finish line by the nose of his car for the win. It was Berg’s third feature win of the week, having won in Grand Rapids and Greenbush earlier in the week. Leeper was second with Puffe third, Greg Caspers (filling in for his son Dusty) fourth and John Farrington fifth.

The 17-car field of Wissota Hornets were led to the green flag by pole sitter Cejay LaValley, who quickly raced to the lead over Megan Vernlund, Chad Reller and Travis Olafson. LaValley stayed on the gas and, in her most impressive race of the season thus far, held off the charges from behind her. Reller moved up into second and raced side-by-side with LaValley, but it was Olafson who went on to pick up his clean-sweep win for the night. Reller was second with Carter Matthews charging up late to take third. Vernlund and Ellen Lange finished in the top five.

A couple of cautions slowed the action on the track, but Sparby held the restarts to claim the victory.
