ALEXANDRIA -- For the second year in a row, the Bemidji High School trap shooting team is headed to state.

The Lumberjacks were one of 40 teams to punch their tickets Tuesday at the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Trap Shooting Championship in Alexandria. BHS scored a 479 to qualify for the Minnesota State High School League State Tournament. Bemidji was one of seven teams to tie for 21st overall.

“It was kind of the expectation of a lot of the coaches and the kids,” team manager Kelly Geiger said. “We really thought we had the skill to make it there again this year. It’s awesome.”

The 2019 state tournament -- which is set for Friday, June 21, at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake -- is the third the team has qualified for in the last four seasons.

“We were talking to some coaches from Hermantown and they said they hadn’t been to the state tournament in seven years,” Geiger said. “It’s pretty cool that we got there two years in a row, and now we’re in the third year out of the last four.”

Nic Geiger, Tate Hammitt and Nicholas Peterson had already qualified for state as individuals at the conclusion of the regular season in May. They helped lead the Jacks to a conference title in Class 9A, Conference 2.

Brandon Morris took team high gun honors Tuesday by leading the way with his score of 97, tying for eighth among all Class 9A individuals. He started off the day by notching a 50 Straight.

He was followed by Hammitt and Avery Gieser with scores of 96, while Tanner Amundson, Noah Lundberg and Matthew Rud each posted 95s to comprise the team’s top five shooters.

Allie Lillquist finished as female high gun runner-up among all 9A shooters with her 94, trailing only Park High School’s Emily Hoge (97). Teammate Kiah Martinson was right behind her in third place with 93.

Tanner Kordosky of Hastings captured male and overall high gun honors with his 98, winning by reverse-run tiebreaker.

Blaine posted the best team score in the top 40 with 493 points. Fairmont finished first among Class 9A teams with 483, good for ninth overall.

The team will conduct a shootout to determine the shooters who will represent Bemidji at state at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Northland Regional Shooting Sports Park. Five shooters and two alternates will have the opportunity to represent BHS at the state tournament. One shooters’ spot and two alternate positions will be determined at the shootout.
