SARTELL -- Sam Hendricks is heading back to state for the Bemidji High School boys swimming and diving team.
With a time of 5:03.10, the Lumberjack senior came in second place in the 500 freestyle at the Section 5A championship meet in Sartell on Saturday. Both his time and his place were good enough to send him to next week’s Class A state meet in Minneapolis.
The top three finishers qualify for state, as do all others that meet the state qualifying time.
Hendricks’ mark was the only one that met the state standard for Bemidji, though several others came close.
Hendricks also came in fourth in the 200 freestyle at 1:52.19, and Luke Yartz was fourth in the 100 freestyle at 50.85.
Brekt Thorsgard recorded another top-five finish with his 330.10 score on 1-meter diving for fifth, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Yartz, Walker Erickson, Brooks Matetich and Hendricks also took fifth with a 3:28.02 time.
As a team, Bemidji finished fifth among the 10-team field with 214 points. Alexandria claimed the section championship by a point with 490, just ahead of Sartell-St. Stephen’s 489. Melrose-Sauk Centre (277) and Fergus Falls (219) rounded out the top four.
The Class A state meet spans from Thursday, Feb. 28, to Saturday, March 2, at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
