BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School boys swimming and diving team took third place at its home invitational on Thursday, racking up 427 points in the seven-team field at BHS.
Melrose/Sauk Centre claimed first with 578 points, while Moorhead snuck into second with 439.
Sam Hendricks picked up the Lumberjacks’ lone win on the day, winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:55.75. Luke Yartz reached the top five in the event, as well, clocking in at 1:59.80.
In diving, Bemidji occupied Nos. 2-5 on the board. Aiden Saari led the bunch with a 206.15 score, while Brekt Thorsgard (200.60), Braden Olson (158.05) and Teagen Fenske (150.95) followed in third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Melrose/Sauk Centre’s Sam Heller claimed top honors with a 220.00 score.
In the 100 butterfly, Brooks Matetich repped BHS with a third-place time of 1:05.25, Matetich also took fourth in the 200 IM at 2:28.54.
Other top-five finishes for Bemidji individuals included Hendricks in the 500 free (fourth, 5:24.80) and Yartz in the 100 free (fifth, 54.60).
Three BHS relay teams also took fourth place. The Jacks’ 200 medley relay team (Hendricks, Walker Erickson, Matetich and Kolden Michalicek) finished in 1:56.93. The 200 free relay team (Yartz, Riley Berg, Michalicek and Freddy Petrowske) posted a 1:45.11 time. And the 400 free relay team (Hendricks, Erickson, Matetich and Yartz) timed out at 3:41.80.
Bemidji will dive back into the pool at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Thief River Falls.
