DETROIT LAKES -- The Bemidji High School Nordic skiing teams each posted top-three finishes at the Detroit Mountain Opener in Detroit Lakes on Tuesday. The event was a circuit race on a course just under two kilometers long with skiers completing three laps.

The Lumberjack girls finished second with 377 points, just two back of first-place Alexandria’s 379. The BHS boys placed third with 359 points, trailing only first-place Brainerd (380) and second-place Moorhead (365).

Gwen Youso posted the top time for the girls with a mark of 16:11.7, only 13 seconds off the lead, to finish third individually for the Jacks. Kinley Prestegard followed in fourth place to also crack the top five with a time of 16:58.6.

“They had a really tight race in there, right up there in the top five,” said head coach Mark Walters. “... That was a really fun race to watch.”

Alexandria’s Kaisa Bosek finished in first overall with a time of 15:58.7.

For the boys, Zac Fouquerel-Skoe led the way for Bemidji with a second-place finish, recording a time of 13:26.6, just 1.5 seconds behind winner Evan Storbakken (13:25.1) of Brainerd. Nick Youso trailed Fouquerel-Skoe and took third overall with his time of 13:44.5.

“They were pretty much neck and neck until the end, and on the last technical downhill turn,” Walters said. The top three skiers came around the last corner three-wide, but Storbakken edged out the Jacks.

The TrekNorth boys team competed at the meet and finished seventh overall. Louis Morrissey paced the Sundogs with his 11th-place time of 15:08.8.

The Lumberjacks are next scheduled to host the Montebello Relays in Bemidji at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. Weather will determine in the coming days whether the course will have appropriate snow conditions to host the meet.
