OUTDOORS NOTES: HSC hosts Celebrate Fishing speaker series, Ice Fishing Follies

HSC hosts Celebrate Fishing speaker series

BEMIDJI—Come out on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to Celebrate Fishing! at the Headwaters Science Center in Bemidji.

Presentations are by local guides and anglers willing to share information on equipment, how-to techniques and answer your questions. Each night starts with a light meal, followed by a presentation and a door prize giveaway. Door prizes include ice house rental on Lake Bemidji, Fly Fishing kits with rod and reel and more, a release said.

The schedule:

• Monday, Dec. 3: Fishing for Sturgeon, Henry Drewes, DNR Fisheries, and Alaska Salmon, Mike Hruza

• Monday, Dec. 10: Fly Fishing & Fly Tying for Bass and Bluegills, Trout Unlimited Members

Monday, Dec. 17: Family Fishing Fun, Dick Beardsley, Area Fishing Guide.

• Monday, Jan. 7: Fishing "Green," Matthew Breuer, North Country Guide Service

This series in part of the We are Water MN exhibit and community engagement project. We are Water MN is led by the Minnesota Humanities Center in partnership with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Minnesota Historical Society, the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

Ice Fishing Follies on Dec. 15

BEMIDJI—Local fishing organizations will be celebrating ice fishing on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Headwaters Science Center for Ice Fishing Follies!

Learn tips and tricks, take the Fish ID Challenge and explore the We Are Water MN exhibit. There will be kid's casting activities, fish printing, macroinvertebrates and mechanical fishing. Trout Unlimited, Take a Kid Fishing and other organizations will be on hand. One lucky winner will win a half-day guided ice fishing trip for a group that includes a couple up-and-coming ice fishing youth with Dick Beardsley, an area fishing guide.

"The Two Ice Fishing Newbies" live feed will be broadcast to HSC, featuring HSC Director Annie Butler Ricks and Beltrami Historical Society Director Gary Rozman, as they are introduced to ice fishing. Filleting demonstrations (of the fish they catch) will occur at 3 p.m, 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. This event is free to HSC members with special pricing for non-members during the event of $5/person or $15/family.
