BEMIDJI - Bemidji Speedway was the place to be Sunday night.

Hosting the Wissota Race of Champions qualifier race, the track was prepped and ready for the field of Wissota cars vying for the opportunity to race in the Wissota Race of Champions later this fall in South Dakota.

All Wissota tracks race one night every summer, with the champion in each Wissota class winning the chance to compete at this prestigious event.

It was also Kids Night at the track with all fans 12 and under getting free admission and a chance to meet the drivers and pick up autographs.

Next Sunday it will be a regular race night but again the kids will be back on track with the always popular Kids Box Car races on the track during intermission.

Mini Stock

The first of seven feature races was the mini stocks.

Chris Isensee led the early portion of the race before having to pit for repairs. Josh Berg took over the lead with Ross Magnuson close on his bumper.

But the race belonged to Billy Smith. Charging up from his tailback position, weaving through traffic all the way to the lead and another feature win.

Magnuson, Mike Hart, Keith Higginbotham, and Kyle Davis were top five finishers.

Outlaw Mini Mods

The Outlaw Mini Mod feature was led on track by pole sitter Tommy Patton with Allen Foster to his right. Foster grabbed the early lead and led a good portion of the race before sliding and dropping back giving the lead over to Patton.

Patten held off Tyler Jonson for the win, his first, with Dane Olson, Foster and Kelly Steele making it into the top five.

Wissota Super Stock

The first of the Wissota ROC races was the Wissota Super Stocks.

Keith Keena powered out to the front with Tim Johnson pulling into second. Johnson raced inside the turn four corner and came out in the lead but Keena came back to retake the front spot.

Johnson tried again on the back straight and racing high into the third turn came out in front and quickly pulled out to a huge lead. Johnson won by nearly a half-lap over his closest rival becoming the first Wissota ROC race qualifier from Bemidji Speedway.

Keena finished in second with Tim Carlson, Matt Sparby, and Harley Kroening in the top five.

Wissota Pure Stock

The pures raced single-file most of the race with Kade Leeper out front by a car length. Sterling Knaeble got around Austin Carlson for second while also making a move from his fourth row starting position was Kevin Baumgarner who raced up into third.

Dean Olafson also passed several cars to pull into the fourth spot with son Travis Olafson finishing in fifth. Leeper picked up his first ever feature win and the qualifier.

Wissota Mod Four

The Wissota Mod Fours was a super fast flag-to-flag win for Conrad Schwinn pulling into the lead when the green flag of flagman Chad Dyrdahl waved until he crossed under the checkered flag.

Adam Prieve pulled into second with Josh Seely-Sautbine third. Tonja Stranger held fourth with Chris Dyrdahl fifth. Schwinn qualified for the ROC race this fall with the win.

Wissota Midwest Modifieds

Brandon Bahr and Matt Sparby led the field of Wissota Midwest Mods on track for their qualifier with Bahr taking the early lead over Sparby. An early caution found Tim Jackson going to the pits for repairs and returning tailback for the restart.

Bahr, Sparby, Bret Schmidt, Skyler Smith and Doyle Erickson held the top five spots on the restart.

Erickson and Smith battled for position while Schmidt challenged Sparby for second. Racing high and low on the increasingly fast and wide racing surface Schmidt raced into second when multiple cars spun on the front straight bringing the caution flag out once again with Sparby going to the pits with damage to his No. 81 car.

The restart was controlled by Bahr with Schmidt once again racing high and low looking for the traction to get around him.

Charging up from his tailback spot was Jackson racing around Matt Fullerton and Smith for fourth. Schmidt raced hard around the high side of the back straight into the 3-4 corner and into the lead and quickly put all questions aside of who would win this race.

Schmidt won with Bahr, Erickson, Jackson and Smith in the top five. Schmidt will represent Bemidji Speedway at the ROC race.

Wissota A Modifieds

The final race of a great night of racing was the Wissota Modifieds led by Tim Jackson on the pole and 13 year old Tyler Kaetor to his right.

In what was hoped to be the first challenge on Bemidji Speedway of the two young guns of Wissota racing.

Fourteen-year-old Nathan Sletto and 13 year old Tyler Kaetor ended when before the race got the green Sletto had car trouble and pulled into the infield. Both these drivers have made the big jump from the ranks of the Outlaw Mini Mods to the Wissota Midwest Modified class and the Wissota Modifieds this summer.

With the green flag waving Jackson took the lead with Ken Hron, Davey Mills, Bryan Dyrdahl, and Kaetor in the top five. Hron raced up to challenge Jackson for the lead several times but Jackson has been on a roll as of late and held the fast lane.

With the field of mods stretched out around the very fast track the only action was Hron challenging Jackson down the back straight on the white flag lap. Racing up next to the leader but unable to get around him.

Jackson pulled into Victory Lane with his Just Four Fun car once again. Hron, Mills, Dyrdahl and Tim Johnson finished in the top five with Jackson the ROC qualifier.
