INDOOR FOOTBALL: Axemen shutout in season finale

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA — Defense dominated Saturday night as the Cedar Rapids Titans shutout the Bemidji Axemen 48-0 in the Axemen’s Indoor Football League regular-season finale.

The Tians (9-4) clinched second place in the United Conference, guaranteeing them a spot in the IFL playoffs, with the win while the Axemen (2-12) end the season without scoring a point against their rival and a 10-game losing streak.

The Titans didn’t waste anytime taking control of the game as Washaun Ealey scored on a one-yard burst to give his team all the points it needed with 11:58 left in the first quarter.

Willie Copeland found Tyree Watkins on a 22-yard touchdown pass to boost the team’s lead to 14-0 after the first quarter.

The Axemen held Cedar Rapids to a 46-yard field goal by Phillip Welch to make it a 17-0 deficit heading into halftime.

The Titans were able to find their offense however while the defense continued to shutout the Axemen.

Ealey added another touchdown run while Copeland found Watkins again for another touchdown pass.

Robert Brown and Zach Brown each added a touchdown while Welch added one last field goal before time expired on Bemidji’s season.
