The holiday season is upon us! It is certainly the time of year to give gifts and to celebrate special people in our lives.
If you know someone who has everything, and is impossible to buy gifts for, but loves books (I'm looking directly at my brother here), you and I might want to check out The Red Door Bookstore. Besides being the place to check out your favorite holiday books and movies, and housing The Red Door Bookstore, December at the library promises activities for all ages: a good mixture of the usuals sprinkled with special events.

Minnesota author Rebecca Fjelland Davis will be at the library at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, presenting her newest book "Slider's Son." According to the author's website, "Grant O'Grady wants nothing more than to be a major league baseball pitcher. He's only thirteen, but his dream seems possible . . . until Big Joe turns his life upside down. Grant and his buddies are no strangers to risk. At the end of the Great Depression in small-town North Dakota, money is tight, so Grant and his friends swipe coal from the coal train when it stops in town to fill its boiler. It's risky to climb the train cars, but so is climbing the water tower to chuck snowballs at passing cars, and so is shooting out Christmas lights downtown. But risk turns into very real danger every time Big Joe shows up. After an encounter with the man one winter night in 1936, Grant's life will change forever."
Please note, that even though the book is written for ages 8-11, this event will be mostly aimed at an adult audience. Fjelland Davis will have copies of her book available for sale and signing.
There are three book club opportunities at the Bemidji Public Library. The Monthly Adult Book Discussion Group will meet at noon, Monday, Dec. 11. The group will be discussing "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henríquez. The Young Adult Book Club, for anyone young and old who likes to read and discuss YA books, meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19. This month's title will be announced shortly (call 218-751-3963 for details). At 3:30 p.m. also Tuesday, Dec. 19, the Kid's Book Club meets for children ages 10-13. The book up for discussion is "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park's novel. New faces are always welcome at these discussions! Come join the club!
Storytimes for pre-school aged children and their families is at 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Area on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The program consists of three to four stories, followed by a short craft. Themes for December include: "Santa's Moose," "Catch That Cookie," "Christmas Mice" and "The Night Before New Year's."
There will be an afternoon movie shown for kids and their families at 3:45 p.m., Thursday Dec.14. In this feature, a man with a yellow hat tries to get his pet monkey a Christmas present. This film is rated G and runs approximately an hour.
The Bemidji Area Reading Canines (B.A.R.C.) are stopping by the Children's Area at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16. This program gives children the opportunity to enhance their reading skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs. Space is limited, so sign up is required as well as a signed permission form from a parent or legal guardian.
At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, the world famous Robert the Magician is back for a special event titled "Magic of the Holidays." Robert the Magician is a favorite among area children and their families. His shows include lots of audience participation, fabulous magic and books.
