LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thanks for stepping up and doing the hard work
The following is a letter to the editor submitted to the Bemidji Pioneer by a reader. It does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bemidji Pioneer. To submit a letter, email email@example.com or mail it to Bemidji Pioneer, P.O. Box 455, Bemidji, MN 56601.
My grandfather used to say, “Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.” In the age of social media, it is so easy to send a quip, propose an easy fix, insult and criticize.
If the school district has late starts, don’t do research into what all the school district is managing with transportation this year, just tell them how dumb they are.
If the school district is asking for a referendum, don’t find out how our state funds schools, just tell them that here in Bemidji, where we have a severe teacher and staffing shortage, we should pay our teachers less than everyone else in the state. Compare salary schedules to average salaries in the city and not other professional salaries.
Schools, along with many other social institutions, need our support and involvement in the real and complicated issues that they are facing.
If you care and don’t like what you are seeing or hearing, get involved. Don’t get on your computer and write something to show how smart you are, show us by caring enough to give of your time and energy to serve your community.
Being a leader in the age of social media has become a horror show, and I am thankful for all of the individuals in our community who step up to do the hard work on behalf of our community, even when I don’t agree with them.
