LETTER TO THE EDITOR: It doesn't have to be this way

Tragic, senseless, carnage of innocent children again and again. Imagine if it was your child, grandchild or relative. Promising lives and futures gone.
The happy laughter and innocent playing destroyed by bullets spewed out by a weapon created for war. Images of terrified young students running from their schools. Teachers murdered in their place of work.
For those that survived it will be a lifetime of horror with PTSD and mental anguish.

It doesn't have to be this way. Enacting laws that ban assault rifles and multi-round magazines would help reduce the number of innocent lives being taken. Having background checks and waiting periods would also provide much-needed oversight for those purchasing guns.
Our legislators from the state to federal level need to stop allowing a small percentage of voters and powerful lobby groups to dictate our gun policy.
In November it will be important for each of us to pick the future we want for our children and ourselves.
