LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Gun violence needs to be addressed

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the latest school shooting will do anything to address gun violence in the U.S. as shootings have failed to do in the past.

A few changes in our laws could dramatically change the situation, and if we are serious about making changes we need to start by electing legislators who are not beholden to gun lobbies and the National Rifle Association.

And we need to elect these people in November 2022. We should look at what other countries have implemented to address mass shootings and gun safety, New Zealand, Canada and Switzerland to name a few.

A good start would be the elimination of assault weapons. We have a federal law that makes it illegal to have more than three shells in a shotgun magazine to protect our migratory waterfowl so they will not be decimated.

Why can’t we have a law making high-capacity magazines illegal so that we can reduce the number of children killed in the next shooting?

Other measures such as universal background checks and gun safety training and licensing requirements to purchase or own a gun. We need a license to drive a car, why not to own a gun?

Law enforcement needs red flag health and domestic abuse alerts.

I am dismayed that this will fall upon too many deaf ears.
