On Oct. 26, at the Harvest Ball, volunteers, staff and community supporters of Bemidji Community Food Shelf celebrated another successful season at the farm.
Over 11,000 pounds of carrots, onions, sweet and hot peppers, tomatoes, squash and potatoes were raised for donation to hungry families in Beltrami County. The Farm at the Food Shelf, a five-acre urban agriculture project, is one of the few of its kind in the nation. The farm is supported by the Developmental Achievement Center, University of Minnesota Extension, Northwest Minnesota Foundation and numerous volunteers and donors.
We wish to thank the Bemidji Eagles Club for donating their venue for the Harvest Ball, "After Five" for their wonderful dance music, Paul Bunyan Communications, Sanford Health, First National Bank, North Central Door, Naylor Heating, Wagner Plumbing, Knife River Materials and Affinity Plus Credit Union for their generous donations, Culver’s for donating dessert, all the local businesses and individuals who donated silent auction items, and everyone else who helped on the night of the ball.
This winter will be our first season in the Deep Winter Greenhouse (DWG), built by Roger Swenson, our 2017 Friend of the Farm, and made possible by donations from the University of Minnesota, Bernick’s and Beltrami Electric Cooperative. The DWG, a research project of the University of Minnesota, will produce fresh greens from December through May.
