August 7, 2009 -- Work begins Aug. 17 to pave the Paul Bunyan Trail from Walker to Guthrie, making it a nearly contiguous 110-mile trail from Brainerd to Bemidji. U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, DFL-8th District, joined nearly 50 bicyclists for the fifth annual Paul Bunyan Trail Ride on a 26-mile round-trip ride to Guthrie from the Hampton Inn and Suites in Bemidji.

August 7, 1994 -- Third- through fifth-graders released hot air balloons at Library Park following a weeklong, hands-on science camp at the Headwaters Science Center. Some of the students at camp were Jenna Batchelder, Katherine Johnson, Nolan Janikowski, and group leaders, Jess Clarke and Steve Kramer with balloon helpers John Koneene and Jared Danielson.

August 7, 1969 -- A heavy rain squall accompanied by high winds, struck the city, felling some trees, ripping up innumerable branches and toppling articles not well anchored. A water spout was raised on Lake Bemidji rising some 40 to 50 feet out of the lake and appeared to be 25-30 feet in diameter. It eventually faded out on the east shore.

August 7, 1919 -- Bemidji is to be well represented at the big celebration at Blackduck in honor of returned soldiers, sailors and marines. The occasion to be in the form of a homecoming day. Bemidji's military band is to play at the celebration and the program will provide many other entertainment features. A large number of Bemidji businessmen announced they will attend.
