Pauline Shouts

Pauline Mary Shouts, of Bemidji, MN died Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, September 4, 2020 at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Bemidji, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Winona, MN.
She was born August 16, 1934, to Paul and Delphina (Heller) Witte in Waterloo, Iowa. She lived in Dike and Parkersburg, Iowa, until 1947, when the family moved to Fairmont, MN. She attended elementary school in Parkersburg, eighth grade at St. Paul’s Parochial School in Fairmont, graduating as valedictorian, and graduated from Fairmont High School as co-valedictorian in 1952. She attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona one year and graduated cum laude from Mankato State Teachers College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She taught second grade in Winnebago and Albert Lea, MN. She married Eugene C. Shouts August 1, 1959, at Fairmont. She taught third grade in Eyota, MN, Sumner, IA, and Mapleton, MN. In 1965 the couple moved to Bemidji where she did substitute teaching and tutoring in the Bemidji School District. Her husband was orchestra director in the Bemidji Schools until 1975. She received her master’s degree in elementary education in 1966 and learning disabilities certification in 1976 from Mankato State College. She taught special education students at the old Riverside School for three years and at Central School for one year before teaching specific learning disability students at Northern Elementary School for twenty-six years. She retired in 1999 after forty years of teaching. She was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ladies’ Guild, and St. Jude’s Circle. She belonged to local, state, and national educational associations during her teaching years and to Education Minnesota retired teachers’ organization. She had been a member of Bemidji Faculty Wives and Bemidji Music Club. Other professional organizations were Minnesota Reaching Association, Northland Reading Council, International Reading Associations, Minnesota Reading Disabilities, and Northern Lights Council of Learning Disabilities. She also was a member of Bemidji Community Arts Counsel, Friends of Lake Bemidji, Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, Paul Bunyan Playhouse, Audubon Society, and Beltrami County Historical Society. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International where she served on the scholarship committee and as recording secretary. She enjoyed listening to music, attending concerts, and traveling through the years and after retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Eugene, Bemidji, MN; one son, Steven (Brenda) Shouts, Cloquet, MN, grandchild, Zachary Shouts; a brother, Donald (Jacqueline) Witte, Altus, OK; three nieces, and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son Jeffrey on February 1, 1997.
