Marty Gausen of Ashburn, VA passed away January 9th, 2021 after a brief hospitalization. Marty was born to Larry and Karen (Alby) Gausen in Bemidji MN on June 26th, 1974. He spent his childhood in Bemidji and graduated from high school in 1992.
Shortly after graduation Marty joined the United States Marine Corp. He was stationed for three years at Camp Pendleton, CA prior to completing his service at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Marty’s experience in the Marines played a very important role in his life. The Marines taught him the value of discipline, teamwork, and investing in a cause larger than himself. Marty felt the time he spent in the USMC were the greatest years of his life, he was honored and proud to have served his country.
His training in the Marine Corp led Marty to pursue a career in law enforcement. He attended college at the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Forensic Science. Marty then started his career with the Department of Homeland Security spending his first six years with US Customs and Border Protection, Grand Forks Sector North Dakota. In 2012, Marty relocated to the Washington DC area, where he spent the last eight years working for US Customs and Border Protection as a National Targeting & Security Specialist.
Marty devoted his professional career to serving and protecting others and he was fortunate to meet and work with many other dedicated individuals. Marty greatly valued the friendships he made during his time in the military and his career with the Department of Homeland Security. Over the years Marty faithfully followed his favorite sports teams from his native Minnesota and he adopted more teams after spending time in North Dakota and Washington DC. He was also an avid music fan. He enjoyed spending hours refining his guitar skills, learning and playing songs from his favorite rock bands. Marty’s quick wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Marty is survived by his siblings; Laurie Stensland, Kyle (Rita) Gausen, and Carrie (Richard) Peterlik. Nephews; Kory (Tyann) Gausen, Shane Claypool, Keith Gausen, Rob Foy. Nieces; Amy (Kalen) Stoneking, Meg (Erik) Johnson. He was preceded in death by both his parents and his beloved ex-wife Heather. His family finds comfort in knowing he has been reunited with the most significant people in his life, may he rest in peace.
Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN is being planned for a later date.
