Elmo was born on May 23rd, 1931 to Elmer & Lulu Skare in Bagley, MN. He grew up on a farm just south of Bagley, where he attended school and spent his early years helping on the farm with his brother Orlan. Elmo graduated from Bagley High School in 1949 and then spent a year studying at Bemidji State University. He joined the Army and served in the Korean War from 1952-1954. Elmo went on to attend college at NDSU in Fargo, ND. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1957, with a major in Agronomy and a minor in Economics. Shortly after, Elmo met and married Gail Larson in September of 1958 (they just celebrated their 61st anniversary). Elmo and Gail then moved to Fergus Falls where he was employed as a soil scientist with the Soil Conservation Service and later moved on to the extension service as an assistant county agent. In 1964 they moved their family to Red Lake Falls where Elmo served as a Red Lake County extension agent. In 1967 they moved for the last time to Bemidji, where they settled their family. Elmo served as a Beltrami county extension agent until 1986 and also on the District 31 school board from 1979-1982. During this time he was also recognized by the U of M as a professor and received the NCAA Distinguished Service Award. Over his career he served as a judge for 4-H projects at county fairs across Minnesota.
After retirement in 1986, Elmo can be remembered by many as their favorite school bus driver. He also worked other driving jobs with Northstar materials and Enterprise Rent-a-Car. He spent a lot of his free time on projects and hobbies, a few of which include hunting and fishing, berry picking and wood working. His family is blessed with many beautiful wooden chairs and other items he crafted. Elmo is remembered by his strong work ethic, fairness, honesty and his integrity. Elmo took pride in his family and everything that he did.
He is survived by his wife Gail, daughters Karen (Mike) Smith of Bemidji, Janet Cariveau of Chaska, MN, and Amy (Kelly) Skare-Klecker of Roseville, MN, sons Dean Skare of Bemidji, and Don (Renee) Skare of Milford, NH, and 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
