Don was born on October 7, 1939, to Guy and Blanche (Irish) Tryon in Bemidji, MN. He grew up in the Nary area and attended the Nary School and later graduated from Bemidji High School. He entered the United States Air Force in January, 1961, and was released from active duty in July, 1964. During his time in the service he was stationed at the Misawa Air Base in Japan for two years. Don worked for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis after his discharge before returning to Bemidji. Don was united in marriage to Gayle Gordon on October 7, 1972, and together they raised three children.
Don worked for many years at Bemidji Aviation as an airplane mechanic and was honored as the General Aviation Maintenance Technician of the Year in 1985 by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Aeronautics Division, Federal Aviation Administration. In 1989, Don embarked on a new adventure as an Aviation Maintenance Instructor at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. He was a machinist at heart and spent much of his time in his shop re-engineering items he had bought, creating his own inventions, and building items better than he saw them in the store. Don enjoyed attending the Western Minnesota Steam Thresher Reunion, in Rollag, MN, each year and camping at Itasca State Park. When he was not working in his shop, Don enjoyed spending time in his screen house with a good book or talking with his many visitors.
