Jay Paul Johnson, 80, of Bemidji, MN died Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Gold Pine Home in Bemidji.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, September 20, 2019 at New Salem Lutheran Church in Turtle River, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jay was born April 30, 1939 at Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND, the son of Mildred and Earl Johnson. He lived and attended pre-school in North Dakota and Iowa towns. He attended Kindergarten in Geneseo, IA, grade school 1-6 in Henderson, MN from ’46 – ’52, middle and high school in Lanesboro, MN from ’52 – ’57, where he graduated. He went on to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN 1957-’58 and then to Stout State College, 1958 – ’62 in Menomonie, WI. He married Jane Hovelson September 3, 1960 in Preston, MN (95 degrees with high humidity) (52 years and 3 months to the day). He received his B.S. degree Ind. Ed., 1962 from Stout State. He was a Management Trainee, 1962-1963 for Electric Steel in Minneapolis, Foundry, Columbia Heights, MN. He received his M. S. Degree in 1964 from Stout State. He taught High School Industrial Arts from 1964-1966 at Sentinel and Aellgate schools in Missoula, MT. He taught High School Industrial Arts from 1966-67 in LaCrosse, WI Central. He taught college industrial tech from 1967-1998 at Bemidji State University. He retired Emeritus, 31 years in 1998. As a teen he worked and lived on farms and worked for MN Conservation Dept Lake/Stream survey the summers of ’58 and ’59, he was a canning factory welder the summer of 1961. He worked for the US Forest Service the summers of 1965-’68. He was an iron worker; working on the Interstate 90 Mississippi Bridge the summer of 1967. He attended many summer school classes and workshops from 1967 to 1998. He was a fly fishing guide in 2005 for 1 afternoon on Turtle Lake and made $100 – (it’s true, ask Korbel). He made a lot of stuff of many materials. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, travel, camping, music in high school and churches and all sports in high school. Offices and services he held were: President of Bethlehem Luther League, Lanesboro, MN in 1955, Industrial Arts Club Advisor at BSU from 1970-1980, Chairman of the Building and Grounds committee for First Lutheran Church in Bemidji from 2004-2005, President of the (East) Long Lake Association from 2008-2010, Fly Tying volunteer for Northern Elementary fifth grade in 2008, Coach – middle grades, 2013 Trek North Students First Program, Church Council in 2012 with New Salem Lutheran in Turtle River, MN, and a member of the Turtle River Day Committee in 2009.
He is survived by his sons, Chris Johnson and Peder Johnson; brother, Jan Johnson; niece, Andrea Johnson; and nephew, Olaf Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Johnson.
