Dr. Irving E. Strom
Dr. Irving Elner Strom passed away peacefully at the Sanford Hospice Center in Fargo, ND on August 19th, 2020, after an evening surrounded by family and after a brief battle with Leukemia.
A celebration of life service will be held in his honor at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji on Friday, August 13th. Visitation begins at 10:00am, the service at 11:00, with a light lunch immediately following the service.
Irving was born the fifth and final child of Lila Ann (Mundon) Strom and George Evald Strom on Wednesday, April 25th, 1934 on the family’s dairy farm in Tamarack, MN. In 1954 he enlisted in the Army and served for almost two years as a radio repairman in Japan. After leaving the Army he attended college at the University of Minnesota.
While at the U of M, Irv met Marlene M. Tronnes. They were married in 1960 and shared 40 years together. They had three children, Jay I. Strom, Mark T. Strom, and Amy J. Strom. After graduating from the U of M, they moved to Greely, Colorado where he earned his master’s and doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado.
Then they moved to Bemidji, MN to fulfill a teaching position at Bemidji State University. He served 25 years as a Doctor of Industrial Technology. He worked with a wonderful group of teachers who became like brothers and lifelong friends to him.
Irv loved the great outdoors. He was an avid duck hunter, deer hunter, and fisherman. He loved watching the Vikings and Twins and westerns. He was incredibly gifted in carpentry and electronics. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.
He loved gardening and landscaping, spending hours a day making the yard gorgeous. After he retired, he enjoyed a very dynamic and prolific hobby of wildlife photography. He took beautiful pictures all over the United States in park reserves and wildlife sanctuaries.
After his wife passed away in 2000, he met another special friend with whom he shared the rest of his life, Gretchen Weigel from Indianapolis, Indiana.
Irv leaves behind his son Jay and (Michelle) Strom, his daughter Amy Strom, and his life partner Gretchen Weigel. Preceding Irv in death are his parents George and Lila (Mundon) Strom, his wife Marlene, and his son Mark.
