Lorraine Ella Sorensen
Lorraine Ella Sorensen, 89, of Bemidji died February 22, 2019, at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, after a brief illness. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, aunt, and friend.
Memorial services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji, MN with Rev. Rob Kopp officiating. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted the family with arrangements.
Lorraine was the third of 4 sisters born to Otto Eli and Ragna (Lasenius) Johnson, in French River, MN. Having been raised on a farm, she was a hard worker in all areas she endeavored. She was a cheerleader in high school and graduated from Clover Valley High School. She went to business college in Duluth, and was proficient in clerical work. She moved to Tacoma, WA and soon married Chester Sorensen. While Chet was pursuing a doctorate in business, Lorraine worked in the University of Washington's School of Business. They built a Chris-Craft boat and their own home in Brown's Point, WA. They also loved to square dance and Lorraine made their outfits. She was an exceptional seamstress who also knitted and crocheted. Chet's opportunity to become a business professor at UMD led them to move to Duluth, MN. There they built a home on a river with 40 acres and called it Pine Ridge. The home and property were always immaculate. Lorraine became a widow when she was 42 and threw herself into an office management position for a mining company attorney in Minneapolis. She would fly there on Sunday nights and back to Duluth on Friday nights, to care for her property and mother on the weekends. She kept this pace up for several years until she married John Sorensen in 1975. In Duluth, Lorraine was a secretary for several churches and was active in the Lioness service group. She and John loved to dance, host parties, and travel in their fifth wheeler. They moved to Bemidji in 1994, off a street named Pine Ridge. They became active in church, forming a welcoming and orientation group for new members. They volunteered as tutors at elementary schools and were named volunteers of the year at North County Hospital (Sanford Medical Center), where they worked for 8 years. Lorraine continued on with volunteering after John passed in 2007. She served communion to patients in Neilson Place Nursing Home and Woods-Edge assisted living, served Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at local churches, and became a confidant for hospice patients as part of the Befriender's visitation volunteers. She loved to laugh, learn, attend concerts and church, garden, and she loved dogs.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews, step-sons, a step-daughter, and step-grandchildren.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Eli and Ragna Johnson, husbands, Dr. Chester Sorensen, and John Edward Sorensen, sisters Bernice (Richard) Dahl, Margaret (Robert) Mathews, and Nancy McGath.
Lorraine's family is in debt to her many friends who have helped and supported her over the years. In particular, special thanks to Gerald and Kathy Moe, Terry and Mary Nord, Lorne and Verna Lofberg, Nancy and David Holles, Helen LeClaire, and Kim and Dave Smith.
