Viola Jean Kaus
Viola (Jensrud) Kaus passed peacefully from this life, to new life in heaven, on Monday, February 4, 2019. She was 86 years old. Vi was born August 30, 1932 near Crookston, Minnesota. Vi spent her early years helping out on the family farm but after graduation from high school at the Agricultural College, moved to Duluth, Minnesota where she worked at Davidson Publishing Company. While living in Duluth she met her future husband, Ralph, on a blind date. The two were married on October 7, 1950 at the United Baptist Christian Church in Duluth. Vi was a devoted mother to their 5 children and was happily married to Ralph for nearly 68 years. The couple made their home in Bemidji, Minnesota for many years, until health problems forced them to move to Shell Rock, Iowa, in 2014, to be closer to family. The last year of her life was spent at the Clarksville Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa. Vi was a den mother for her son's cub scout troop and a troop leader for her daughters' girl scout troops. She enjoyed her neighbors, bridge club friends, Birthday Club, and the Carr Lake Homemakers. The Jensrud family reunion was a highlight for her each year. Vi loved playing games, including Rummikub and Hand and Foot. It was a red letter day when she could beat her husband in cribbage when they had their daily game in later years. Vi is remembered for her wonderful cookies, fabulous fish fries, and love for her husband, children and grandchildren. She and Ralph traveled to nearly all the 50 states in their motorhome, as well as Canada, Mexico and the Holy Land. They were always up for an adventure. Vi had a quiet faith and was involved in church, enjoyed watching the Gaithers on TV and listening to hymns in the last few months of her life. Viola Jean Kaus is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, her parents, Gilbert and Eva Jensrud, and her brothers, Orville, Marvin, Harvey, Donald and Duane. She is survived by 3 sisters, Agnes Demarais, Shirley Johnsen, and Charlotte Sparrow-Smith, 2 brothers, Ervin and Allen (Jack), and numerous nieces and nephews. She also has a son Mike (Sue), daughters Debbie (Dave) Henderson, Sally (Wally) Doric, Liz (Mark) Barbour, and Mary (Kevin) Butters, as well as 17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She is greatly loved by her family and will be missed by all. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church of Bemidji at which time both Ralph and Vi will be honored. Vi will be interred at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth, Minnesota, with her husband.
