BSU anglers compete at national championships
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. -- A trio of teams represented Bemidji State at the 2019 YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship on the Potomac River in Maryland this week.
Benjamin Saba and Robert Troje experienced the best outing of the three Beavers teams, catching seven fish weighing in at 19 pounds total to place 92nd at the three-day event held June 4-6. Only the top 10 teams through the first two days advanced to the third day of competition.
Thor Swanson and Mitchell Swanson finished 110th with six fish weighing 15 pounds, 3 ounces, while Lincoln Horsman and Travis Rotzien took 130th with four fish weighing 11 pounds, 12 ounces.
The six BSU anglers all hail from Minnesota: Saba from Ramsey, Troje from Hastings, Horsman from Wabasha, Rotzien from Bemidji, and the Swanson brothers from Blaine.
The Murray State duo of Adam Puckett and Blake Albertson hauled in 15 fish weighing 51 pounds, 3 ounces to take home the national title by only three ounces over Tristan McCormick and Dakota Pierce from Bethel University (Tenn.).
Nearly 150 teams from more than 90 schools competed at the Fishing League Worldwide event.
