Cass Lake man arrested for burglarizing Bemidji home, assaulting officer

BEMIDJI—A Cass Lake man was arrested Tuesday for breaking into a Bemidji residence and fighting a police officer.

Vincent HallVincent Alonzo Hall, 21, was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree property damage, and fourth-degree assault of an officer. The burglary and property damage charges are listed as felonies. The assault charge is listed as a gross misdemeanor.

According to the criminal complaint, Bemidji police responded to the residence in the 1300 block of Event Center Drive at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving a call about a man "banging on the back door." One of the residents of the home said he was asleep when he first heard Hall come near the home.

Hall allegedly broke the back door window when he threw a pot at it. He then entered the home, and the resident ran into another room to call the police.

When officers found Hall in the home, one officer told Hall to raise his hands. Hall reportedly stuck up his middle finger at the officer. The officer grabbed Hall by the arm after he refused to leave the home. Hall pulled away. He then "lunged forward and tackled" the officer to the ground, causing the officer to land in broken glass and scrape his arm on the concrete. The officer then managed to get Hall into his squad vehicle. Although the complaint didn't list Hall's blood alcohol level, the officer reported a "strong smell of alcohol."

In addition to shattering the back patio door, the incident also resulted in the screen door being "torn off and ripped." The door jam also was bent.

Hall appeared in court Wednesday.
