Bemidji man sentenced for domestic assault in DL
Charles Everett Goodwin, 33, of Bemidji has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony domestic assault.
A second felony domestic assault charge was dropped in a plea agreement.
According to court records, at 2:39 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2017, he went to his girlfriend's residence in Detroit Lakes and assaulted her with her children present. He came over intoxicated and struck her in the head and arms. She said he had assaulted her in the past and gets violent when he drinks. He left on foot before police arrived, and was arrested a few hours later when he returned to get his van.
Goodwin appeared in court March 13 before District Judge Jay Carlson, who sentenced him to 24 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed five years.
He was ordered to serve 180 days in jail, with credit granted for 22 days served. He was approved for in-house Sentence to Service work, and will not be granted furloughs for treatment.
After his jail term is served he must complete the Beltrami County Court's domestic violence program.
He was fined $1,000, plus $1,090 in court fees, and ordered to abstain from drugs and alcohol, submit to random testing, get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations. He was placed on supervised probation for five years.
