VOLLEYBALL: BSU claims first NSIC win since 2016

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State volleyball team picked up its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win since 2016 Tuesday night in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23) sweep of Minnesota Crookston at the BSU Gymnasium.

The win snapped the Beavers’ 32-match conference losing streak that dated back to Oct. 15, 2016.

“I’m happy we got our first conference win,” BSU head coach Kevin Ulmer said in a press release. “I’m proud of their resiliency and how they worked through some of the challenges we’ve had. The way our middles played tonight and how Mary (Campbell) got them the ball was fantastic.”

Freshman Mary Campbell filled in at setter again for the Beavers (4-7, 1-2 NSIC) and led both teams with 31 assists while picking up eight digs defensively against the Golden Eagles (2-9, 0-3 NSIC).

Middle blockers Julie Touchett and Maddie Filipiak led BSU on the attack, totaling 20 of the team’s 37 kills, while also leading the team by hitting .320 and .318, respectively.

Defensively, Emma Hallmann led with 15 digs while Becka Cronin added 11. Filipiak led the Beavers with four blocks and Touchett added three as BSU out-blocked UMC, 7-6.

The Beavers will hit the road this weekend to face No. 2 Northern State and MSU Moorhead, Sept. 14-15.
