City approves agreement for Hockey Day Minnesota
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji City Council approved an agreement Monday with the committee organizing the local Hockey Day Minnesota event.
According to city documents, the agreement was drafted with input from city staff, officials from the Bemidji Economic Development Authority and committee representatives. The agreement was modeled after a similar document used by leaders in Stillwater, which hosted the event in 2017.
The agreement was made to reflect both the usage of the BEDA-owned site of the event and associated city infrastructure. The BEDA, which acts as the economic arm of the city, owns two vacant lots in the area on Lake Bemidji’s South Shore near the Sanford Center where the event will take place.
Hockey Day Minnesota 2019 is scheduled for Jan. 17-19. It will be the 13th edition of the event, organized by the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League and the Twin Cities-based Fox Sports North Channel.
Every year, the team and the channel select a community to have outdoor games played between high school teams. The games and special features on the community are produced and broadcast throughout the day on Fox Sports North.
Games scheduled for the event include:
- Bemidji girls vs Woodbury
- BSU men vs Michigan Tech
- Minnetonka boys vs Andover
- BSU women vs Minnesota State
- Bemidji boys vs Greenway
As part of the approved agreement, the committee will begin cleanup after the event and will be allowed to continue the cleanup into February. The agreement also states that the site is expected to be completely restored by May 1.
Following the event, the committee will also work with the city Public Works Department as well as the Parks and Recreation Department to remove any final items and conduct a walk-through inspection.
The agreement also states that the committee has until Oct. 1 to pay the city an escrow or security deposit of $5,000.
