Five members of the Business Professional of America Team will represent Blackduck at the State Competition in March.

Team advisor Kari Pickett and the seven members of the 2018 BPA team traveled to Detroit Lakes on Wednesday, Jan. 24, to compete in the regional competition. Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a career and technical student organization that is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. BPA aims to develop leadership, academic and technological skills in the workplace among students and leaders within the community. Students participate and compete in a variety of programs designed to prepare them to enter the professional community and to learn the procedures and legalities surrounding different business pursuits, and how to present themselves in a professional capacity in a notable fashion in real world situations.

Advancing to state for the Blackduck BPA are Andrew Metzler in Legal Office Procedure; Sydnee Stroeing in Business Law and Ethics; Kirsten Theisen in Basic Office Systems and Procedures; and, advancing in two events, Kialee Brands, who is going to state in Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications and Advanced Office Systems and Procedures.

Blackduck BPA students also earned the coveted Torch Awards, including: Kialee Brands, Tori Bird, Kirsten Theisen, Nolan Juelson and Sydnee Stroeing. The Business Professionals of America's Torch Awards Program is designed to promote professionalism and leadership in both career development and personal growth. Students complete activities in the seven Torch categories -- leadership; service; cooperation; knowledge; friendship; love, hope, faith; and patriotism -- then log their activities in an online Torch resume. Rounding out the team at Detroit Lakes, was BPA team member, sophomore, William Johnson.

“The entire Blackduck BPA team represented Blackduck High School with outstanding professionalism and poise,” Pickett said.

Metzler, Theisen, Brands, and Stroeing, will represent Blackduck and the Region at the State BPA Competition on March 8-10 at the Hyatt Regency Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis, among more than 1,000 Minnesota students.
