WHITE EARTH, Minn. - White Earth Band of Chippewa chairwoman Erma Vizenor is running this week against six challengers vying for her job.
The top two vote-getters in Tuesday's election will advance to the tribe's general election on June 10, unless a candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote. In that case the candidate wins the seat outright.
Former tribal chairman Darrell "Chip" Wadena filed candidacy papers in order to get his old job back, but the White Earth Tribal Council did not certify him as a candidate based on his criminal history.
Also on Tuesday's ballot is Kenneth "Gus" Bevins, who is running to keep his District III representative seat against 11 other candidates.
