Vera Wakemup Hoagland Belt, 74, of Bemidji, formerly of Nett Lake, Minn., died Monday, March 17, 2008, at her residence in Bemidji. Traditional tribal rites will be at 10 p.m. today at the Nett Lake School. Lee Staples will be the spiritual advisor.

Vera Wakemup Hoagland Belt, 74, of Bemidji, formerly of Nett Lake, Minn., died Monday, March 17, 2008, at her residence in Bemidji.

Traditional tribal rites will be at 10 p.m. today at the Nett Lake School. Lee Staples will be the spiritual advisor.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Hoagland, Wendell Hoagland, David May, Rory Erler, Robert May Jr. and William Day.

Honorary pallbearers will be all her other grandsons. Burial will be in the new Nett Lake Cemetery. The Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook, Minn. assisted the family with arrangements.

She was born July 25, 1933, to John and Mabel (Soreyes) Wakemup in Nett Lake. She grew up and lived most of her life in Nett Lake, where she worked at various jobs. She was a member of the Bois Forte of Chippewa. She liked beading, sewing, puzzle books, going to casinos, powwows and family gatherings. She resided in Bemidji the past three years.

She is survived by her sons, Donald Hoagland of Nett Lake and Leland Hoagland of Rush City; daughters, Cheryl Jensen of Nett Lake, Frances May of Bemidji, Betsy May of Nett Lake, Wendy Hoagland of New Hope, Minn., and Rhonda Hoagland of Nett Lake; brother, Roger Wakemup of Duluth; sisters, Marge Holmes of Nett Lake and Alice Wakemup of Duluth; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Leland Hoagland; second husband, Jerry Belt; children, Joyce Day and Richard Wakemup; one grandson; brothers, Ralph, John Jr. and Frank Wakemup; and sister, Susan Sullivan.
