BEMIDJI - Relatives and friends from around the world started calling their Bemidji connections Sunday night when they heard news reports of up to 24 inches of snow on the ground in northern Minnesota.
Heavy snow began falling around 10 p.m. Saturday in the Bemidji area. After a break during Sunday morning hours, another onslaught of the heavy stuff began around 1 p.m. It turned lighter as Sunday wore on, but never really stopped. By late evening, some areas measured two feet of snow.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Saturday night, and it continued through 7 a.m. Monday.
Now, the massive job of snow removal is in full gear. By morning, many main roads were plowed, although piles of snow made some intersections a little difficult to navigate.
Bemidji schools were called off for Monday, and several other events were cancelled or postponed.
