A garage on Spider Lake burned to the ground Thursday afternoon, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the air visible for miles around Nevis.
The Nevis Fire Department brought all its trucks and called for mutual aid from Akeley but the structure on Glenhaven Drive was a total loss.
The homeowners called in the blaze. There were no injuries. The garage was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived moments later. The call came in before 3 p.m.
Spectators pulled over to the side of County Road 2 to the east of the home, where the smoke was visible.
Nevis merchants stood out on their doorsteps watching the smoke.

It went from just a little black smoke to a lot," said Les Scouton, who was visiting down the road with his son.
The two raced to the scene.
"You should have heard those aerosol cans popping when it all went up," Scouton said.
Neighbors from the street showed up and stood along the road.
