SAWYER-Runners from the Red Lake and Leech Lake Indian Reservations finished the 19th annual Anishinaabe Spiritual Run for Sobriety on Saturday at the Fond du Lac Mash-ka-wisen Powwow Grounds in Sawyer. The event, created to celebrate sobriety and healthy living, is planned each year in correlation with the Celebration of Sobriety Powwow.

Participants began the 200-mile journey Wednesday in Redby with a five mile fun run to Red Lake. Runners jogged relay-style from Red Lake to Bemidji on Wednesday morning, carrying eagle feather staffs along the way. One staff has been used in all 19 runs.

The Anishinaabe Spiritual Run crew departed Bemidji on Wednesday afternoon for the Leech Lake Veterans Memorial Grounds in Cass Lake, where they camped for the night. During the four-day run, stops were made in Grand Rapids and Floodwood before arriving at the 36th annual Celebration of Sobriety Powwow Saturday.
