FARGO -- Sanford Health employees will receive a double bonus -- its first ever -- as thanks for their efforts in achieving a very healthy bottom line.

Kelby Krabbenhoft, Sanford's chief executive officer, wrote employees to inform them of the bonus, which will be paid to all eligible (non-union) staff Friday.

"The bonus has been approved because of your extraordinary efforts and our exceptional performance this past fiscal year," he wrote.

The bonus will total $10 million, according to Krabbenhoft. When combined with salary increases that took effect in August, Sanford will have increased its investment in employee pay by $50 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

Full-time employees will receive bonuses of $600, while part-time staff will receive bonuses of $300 and PRN staff, a medical term meaning "as needed," $100.

"What does it mean to be part of a team who delivers a patient experience unrivaled in the region?" Krabbenhoft wrote. "It means you can rely on the predictability of an annual salary increase, and when we exceed our financial goals, you will receive a bonus in recognition of your contribution."

In response to questions about the bonuses, Sanford provided a statement from Ann Christenson, executive vice president, Sanford human resources.

"We are in a service industry focused on patient care, our employees contribute in a huge way to ensuring our patients and their families get outstanding care," Christenson said.

"A bonus for employees is a gratifying way to say thank you for choosing healthcare as your profession and putting the health of others first," Christenson added. "Because of our teams' hard work, it's a privilege to be able to recognize them with a bonus for the excellent care they provide all of the people and communities we serve."

Sanford Health has 27,000 employees throughout its service area, which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and parts of Iowa and Nebraska among nine states and three countries. It has 43 hospitals and almost 250 clinics.
