WILTON -- The public is invited as Sacred Heart Church in Wilton celebrates its centennial on Sunday.

The event will begin with mass at 10 a.m. celebrated by Bishop Michael Hoeppner of the Diocese of Crookston and current Wilton priest, Rev. Jerry Rogers.

The town of Wilton was organized as a village on May 16, 1906, according to a press release. Sacred Heart Church was incorporated in 1914 and the original church was built that same year. The first mass was celebrated in 1915. In the early years, the release said, mass was held only once a month, presided over by a priest from St. Philip’s parish in Bemidji. The first resident priest was Rev. Ketter, the release said.

In 1936, Sacred Heart held its first fall dinner and it is still held every third Sunday in September, the release said. This will be the 79th year for the event. Also, in 1947, the first Sunday of the month was designated as “Pot Luck Sunday,” a tradition that continues today.

Sacred Heart Church currently is the spiritual home to 65 families, the release said.
