Rachel Mary Barrett, 84

Rachel Mary Barrett, whose Ojibwe name was Zhiigaa-Ikwe which means Widow Woman, 84, of Redby, died on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at Red Lake Indian Hospital in Red Lake.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the St. Antipas Episcopal Church in Redby with Rev. George Ross officiating. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the spring in St. Antipas Episcopal Cemetery in Redby.

Honorary pallbearers will be Michelle Cobenais, Jerilyn Whitefeather, Karen Chaboyea, Debbie Chaboyea, Lori Beaulieu, with alternates, Nancy Beaulieu and Phyllis Sumner.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Barrett, Eric Winegardner, Ricky Barrett, Bobby Whitefeather Jr., David Graves, Duane "Boogins" Cobenais III, Derrick Cobenais, with alternates, David Head, Daniel Barrett and Derald "Ola" Cobenais.

She was born on June 16, 1922, to David and Ellen (LaTraile) Chaboyea, at home in Red Lake. She grew up and attended school in Red Lake, and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1939. She married Adolph Louis "Punce" Barrett on Sept. 17, 1940, in Redby. She was a housewife until 1966. While at home, she gave haircuts and perms at people's request. She worked at the Red Lake Fishery for four years. In 1970, she worked for the University of Minnesota as a program assistant for the Extension Service. While at the job, she became a Master Gardener. She retired in 1988.

She enjoyed gardening, crafts -- especially basketry, visiting with friends, helping people, fishing and hunting in her early days, collecting rocks and arrowheads, polishing rocks, and she also was a woodcarver.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Lucy) Barrett Sr. of Red Lake, Mary Winegardner of Redby and Peggy Whitefeather of Redby; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Bill Smith; grandparents; brothers, David Chaboyea and John D. Smith; sisters, Marjorie Smith, Edith Tanner and Alberta Pemberton; sons, Darrell Barrett and David Barrett; and a special granddaughter.
