BEMIDJI-The Bemidji City Council will take action the 2018 preliminary tax levy.

According to city documents, Bemidji financial staff have set the preliminary tax levy at an increase of 2 percent, based on the council's Aug. 27 work session. If passed, the result would be a levy of $5,867,794. Because it's a preliminary tax levy, the council does have the ability to reduce the amount at the Dec. 17 meeting, when the final levy is set.

In the meeting's agenda documents, Finance Director Ron Eischens said that while a 2 percent levy increase is not required to meet proposed 2019 budget needs, it does provide flexibility to address undecided issues, such as the potential creation of a development director position, railroad corridor development and Sanford Center capital replacement needs. A levy increase will also be needed to minimize any future levy increases.

City staff is recommending that the council approve the preliminary tax levy and set a truth in taxation hearing for Dec. 3.

Another resolution item for the council to consider Monday is related to climate change. The resolution is for the council to recognize climate change and urge Congress to levy a revenue neutral fee on carbon emissions.
