Peter George Paquette Jr., 66, of Blackduck, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, of cancer surrounded by his family.
A traditional Indian wake will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Cass Lake. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Veteran's Memorial Building. There will also be a traditional Indian wake at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the church and at 9 a.m. Friday at the church. There will also be a traditional Indian service at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery with military honors.
The Cease Family Funeral Home in Blackduck assisted the family with arrangements.
He was born Sept. 27, 1941, to Peter G. Paquette Sr. (Aynemahsung) and Susan Paquette (Jones). He was born a proud member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Cass Lake. He spent his early years growing up in the Cass Lake area until 1953, when his parents moved him to Duluth, Minn. He left Duluth and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958, which he served for three years as an airborne ranger in the 101st Division. After completing his tour of duty, he met his wife of 31 years, Joanne Marie Broich, and they were married Feb. 3, 1963. His wife died of cancer in 1994.
He is survived by his brothers, Arthur Paquette of Park Rapids and Francis Paquette of Minneapolis; sisters, Celeste Mae, Gwendolyn Paquette and Patricia Harding (Paquette), all of Minneapolis; children, Theresa (Saul Tapia) Paquette of Minneapolis, Peter (Meghan) Paquette III of Blackduck, Tammy Paquette of Minneapolis, David (Danielle Johnson) Paquette of Cass Lake, Lori Jackson (Paquette) of Minneapolis and Robert Kastner of Ham Lake; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
