The Fire Department was able to rescue the occupants' dog from the structure and remove some personal possessions.
The home and its contents suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage.
No injuries were reported and the Fire Department was on scene until 3 a.m. Thursday.
The Fire Department and Minnesota State Fire Marshall's Office believe the fire started in the garage as a result of carelessly discarded smoking materials.
Twenty-eight firefighters responded and eight pieces of firefighting equipment were used on scene.
Assisting at the scene were the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Bemidji Ambulance Service and Beltrami Electric Cooperative.
