The Nestberg Family Farm near Alvwood in Itasca County is being recognized as one of 136 Minnesota Century Farms.

The Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Farm Bureau announced this week the list of Century Farms for 2019. Qualifying farms have been in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years and are 50 acres or more.

Century Farm families receive a commemorative sign, as well as a certificate signed by State Fair and Farm Bureau presidents and Gov. Tim Walz. Since the program began in 1976, more than 10,500 farms have been recognized.

The Nestberg family has owned the farm since 1912. Herman Nestberg came to this country from Sweden, and he and wife Annie owned the farm until the 1960s. Both Herman and Annie have passed away.

Their son Orville and his wife, Flora, took over in the 1960s. Orville has died, and Flora still lives on the property.

It became a third-generation farm in the early 2000s when son Wesley and his wife, Becky, took over. And now, a fourth generation, Scott Nestberg and his wife, Toren, own part of the land.

Information on all Century Farms will be available at the Minnesota Farm Bureau exhibit during the State Fair, which runs Aug. 22 to Sept. 2.
